Hiring a marquee creates a flexible event space, but there are practical considerations to address before installation.
This guide answers common questions about permissions, site preparation, and planning requirements.
Do I need permission to install a marquee?
In most cases, formal permission is not required for a temporary marquee on private land, such as a garden, private field, or commercial premises where the landowner has given consent.
Permission may be required where a marquee is placed on public land, forms part of a large public event, remains in place for an extended period, or affects access, highways, or public safety.
If you are unsure, we can advise based on your event location and setup.
Council permits and notices
Council involvement is more likely for public or ticketed events, events with large guest numbers, marquees on council-owned land, or events involving alcohol, live music, or late finishes.
Depending on the event, this may include Temporary Event Notices, public liability insurance, and written risk assessments.
The event organiser or landowner is usually responsible for obtaining any required permissions.
We can provide layout details and technical information to support applications if needed.
Space and access requirements
The space required depends on the marquee size, but you should allow room for the full footprint, anchoring around the perimeter, and clear access routes for delivery and installation.
Where possible, allow at least one metre of clearance around the marquee.
Access routes should be free from obstructions and wide enough for equipment to be carried safely.
Ground conditions
Level ground is preferred, but minor slopes or uneven areas can often be accommodated if discussed in advance.
Suitable surfaces include grass, firm soil, and hard standing using weighted anchoring.
Underground services such as water pipes, gas lines, electric cables, drainage systems, or septic tanks must be identified before installation.
If service locations are unknown, a utility check may be required.
Power requirements
Power is not required for the marquee structure itself, but it may be needed for lighting, heating, sound systems, or catering equipment.
If mains power is not available, generator options and power planning should be discussed in advance.
Further guidance is available in our power and electrics guide.
Weather considerations
Our marquees are designed for typical UK weather.
In cases of strong winds, heavy rain, or other adverse conditions, installation plans may be adjusted to ensure safety.
Safety assessments are carried out as standard, and installation may not proceed in extreme conditions.
Site visits
Site visits are recommended for larger events, weddings, complex layouts, or unfamiliar locations.
A visit allows access routes, ground conditions, and setup requirements to be assessed in advance.
