Hard Surface vs Grass Setup Guide

This guide explains the differences between setting up a marquee on grass and on hard surfaces. Understanding these differences helps ensure the correct anchoring method is used and avoids delays or safety issues on the day of installation.

Why the surface type matters

The surface a marquee is installed on determines how it is anchored and how long installation takes. Grass and hard surfaces require different fixing methods to keep the structure secure in changing weather conditions.

It is important to confirm the surface type at the time of booking. Incorrect information can prevent safe installation or lead to additional charges if changes are required on the day.

Marquee setup on grass

Grass is the most common surface for marquee installation. On grass, marquees are secured using ground stakes driven into the soil. This provides strong anchoring when the ground condition is suitable.

For best results, grass should be freshly cut and cleared of debris before installation. The ground should be as level as possible to avoid uneven tension on the marquee frame.

Underground services such as pipes, cables, or drainage must be identified in advance. If stakes cannot be used due to underground obstructions, an alternative setup method may be required.

Marquee setup on hard surfaces

Hard surfaces include patios, driveways, car parks, paving, concrete, and tarmac. On these surfaces, ground stakes cannot be used.

Instead, marquees are secured using weighted anchoring systems. These weights are positioned at each leg of the marquee to provide stability.

Hard surface setups require additional planning. Adequate space must be available around the marquee legs to position the weights safely.

Access requirements

Access is important for both grass and hard surface installations. Our team needs clear access to the setup area for equipment, frames, and anchoring systems.

Narrow pathways, steps, soft ground after rain, or long carry distances should be flagged in advance. Poor access can increase setup time or make installation unsafe.

Weather considerations

Wet weather can affect both grass and hard surfaces. Soft or waterlogged ground may reduce the effectiveness of ground stakes. On hard surfaces, standing water can affect access and weight placement.

For wet conditions, see the Wet Weather Contingency Planning Guide and the Guide to Weather Proofing Your Marquee.

Layout and internal planning

The surface type can influence how furniture and equipment are arranged inside the marquee. Uneven ground may affect table stability and walkways.

Refer to the Furniture Layout Guide for Marquees and Marquee Size Guide when planning your internal layout.

What to confirm before booking

  • Whether the setup surface is grass, hard standing, or a mix of both
  • Any underground services or restrictions
  • Clear access routes for delivery and installation
  • Any slope or uneven areas within the setup space
